Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the province. In the center of the city we find one of the best urban beaches in Spain, both for its diversity of leisure as well as sports and culture. We present you the Las Canteras Beach
Las Canteras Beach is known for its cleanliness and crystal-clear waters. In fact, it is often awarded the Blue Flag, given by the European Union, for its care. In the past it was called the Beach of Reef because of the natural bar it has. Later this bar was used as a quarry to remove the rock that was used to build, among other things, the Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de Canarias.
Three areas of Las Canteras beach
The beach is just over two miles long. Here you can enjoy both sport and leisure or go swimming in the sea, even catching the sun. According to the place where we are located we will see different currents and environments:
- The northern zone or Playa Grande: It measures 1120 meters and is the most protected area. Between its long route is La Barra (which we will talk about later) and the mountains of the peninsula of La Isleta. It is also one of the extremes and where we can find more sand.
- Central area, also called Playa Chica: it has an extension of 760 meters. It is the part where we find more rocks. In addition we can find a small bar called Barra Amarilla. Also we will find the famous rock Peña de la Vieja.
- The south zone, also called the Cicer or Guanarteme (name of the neighborhood). It measures a little over a kilometer and is the area of surfers par excellence. Here the bar is not reached and the waves are stronger. Many have called it the “Hawaii of the Atlantic”. Here we find mostly young people and surf schools.
The Bar
The Barra de Las Canteras is one of the unique landscapes of this beach. It is a weak natural wall that will disappear by the force of the sea and the waves. But thanks to it it makes the area more peaceful and perfect for families with children. It is a narrow reef from La Punta del Arrecife to the Barrio de Guanarteme. Sometimes we can see it and sometimes not, so its line is discontinuous. When the tide is low you can walk on it.
What sports can we practice in Las Canteras Beach?
Along the beach and avenue we can do practically all kinds of sports. In the area of the cicer we find a great variety of surfing schools. Paddle surfing or snorkeling are also good options. If we go for a walk on the beach we will find many young and old, playing paddle. Also along the avenue many people are running or skating.
Also along the avenue we can find all kinds of places to have breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack. At the end of the walk we can also visit the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. Si buscas qué hacer en otras islas te recomendamos que visites “A perfect day in Tenerife“.
