Las Teresitas beach is an ideal place to unwind, only ten minutes away from the city by car and about 20 minutes by bus (guagua for the Canary Islanders). You can also do different sports such as kayaking, paddle surfing or swimming. Moreover, thanks to its pedestrian areas you can go for walks, jogging, skating, etc.
Didn’t you know that the beach of Las Teresitas was made of stone?
In its beginnings the beach was divided into three parts: the one closest to the village of San Andrés was called “tras la arena” (behind the sand), where people used to go to have a snack and bathe. The middle part was known as “los moros” (the Moors) after a group of Moroccan settlers. There was also the mansion of Princess Diana of Orleans, daughter of the Counts of Paris, and Duke Karl of Württemberg, son of Philip Albert, Duke of Württemberg. Finally, “El Barranco de las Teresas”, hence its present name.
It was also considered a dangerous beach, with strong waves. In fact, many locals remember surfing on the beach. Due to the shortage of sand at the time by a construction company, in 1953 the Town Council of Santa Cruz decided to build a beach. At the end of the 1960s, dozens of plots of land had to be expropriated to build the beach.
During the first six months of 1973 sandbags were brought in from the Sahara desert. It took five million sacks to complete the beach (270000 tons of sand). On 15 June of the same year the beach was opened.
