The beaches of Papagayo are one of the jewels of Lanzarote. They are located on the southernmost tip of the island. The Natural Park of Los Ajaches protects these beaches with great value for both their beauty and their fauna. They are almost two kilometers of white sand and tranquility. In front of them we find Isla de Lobos and Fuerteventura.
How many beaches are there in the territory?
The beaches of Papagayo are: Papagayo, Puerto Muelas, Caleta del Congrio, Playa de la Acera, Playa del Pozo, Playa Mujeres and Calentón de San Marcial. All are white sand and calm waters, but each one has its own peculiarity:
- Papagayo: is the last and most famous of the beaches for its beauty.
- Playa Mujeres: is the longest and closest to the city of Playa Blanca.
- Puerto Muelas: it has a parking lot enabled for camping.
- Caleta de Congrio: it is very similar to the previous one.
- Playa de la Acera: next to the Papagayo beach. Both share a parking lot and some bunkers which have been used for restoration.
- Playa del Pozo: white sand and is the second smallest
- Caletón de Marcial and Caletón de Cobre: they are one followed by the other. It is composed of sand and rock and both have small dimensions.
History of Papagayo Beach
Besides its great value for its beauty, the Papagayo Beaches have a great historical value for all the Canary Islands. In 1402 the conquest of the Canary Islands began here, with the arrival of the troops of Jean de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle. In 2019 it won the prize for the best beach in Spain.
How do you get there?
This group of beaches in Lanzarote are located on the coast of the Rubicon, in the tourist town of Playa Blanca.
- From there, and barely ten minutes by car in the direction of Las Coloradas, along a dirt road, we will begin to find the different entrances to the beaches. You pay 3 euros per car if you are not a resident.
- Another option is to go on foot along the many sandy paths. These are easily accessible and suitable for everyone. We recommend you to wear comfortable shoes.
- Finally we can also access them by boat.
What to do in Papagayo Beach?
The two main activities that are recommended are Snorkeling or Kayaking in Lanzarote. The water is very calm and safe. Being so transparent it is not strange that we find some of the following fish: Doradas, Gueldes, Cherne, Viejas, Sargos and Samas.
In Playa Blanca we can find companies that rent from a catamaran to a kayak to enjoy the beauty of these beaches from the other side.
As you may have seen, the beaches of Papagayo are a mandatory stop if you decide to visit this island. Be sure to see what else you can do in Tenerife or La Gomera.
