The word Guachinche has different origins. One says that it comes from the English phrase “I am watching you”. When the Englishmen went to the north of Tenerife, the wine growers would get on the roads to sell their wine. The winegrowers’ wives would also prepare them something to eat to attract the visitor and thus make the purchase more attractive. The Canaries did not understand English at that time so they called the transaction a “guachinche” (a kind of “snake”). So, nowadays the guachinches are kind of restaurants where they sell the wine with local food.
