Santa Cruz de La Palma is dressed in white every year with the arrival of the so-called Indianos. Throughout history the Canaries have had to emigrate to different parts of the planet in search of a better future for their families. One of these waves was to the Indies, especially to Cuba. Most of those who left were from the island of La Palma. When they returned, they were called “los indianos”
Where does the tradition of Los Indianos come from?
In Cuba our ancestors worked hard for years to get their families back on their feet. Many stayed there or formed a family and then returned. When a sailboat was approaching La Palma, the islanders would come to the port looking for their relatives to return. They were greeted with great bustle in the streets, fire burning and great celebrations. For their part, the Indians brought money to pay off old debts, jewels and wealth. They also brought new musical rhythms, typical Cuban food, cigars or new clothing, among other things.
In 1920 a group of friends, grouped in the humorous society La Poteca, started the first parade within the framework of the Carnival. They were joined by musicians, poets, comedians, with the one of eating, drinking and having fun. In 1966 it becomes official that on Carnival Monday the Indians are celebrated.
Why is talcum powder used?
In the 17th century, talcum powder was used on Shrove Monday. It is said that on that day people “powdered” themselves. Other popular beliefs say that it was done when a load of flour came in bad condition, the islanders threw it at them to celebrate the carnival. Finally, it is also said that it is because the rich were previously white skinned and this is one way of achieving this.
How do you have to be dressed?
Like any typical party, Los Indianos also has its own clothing. The men would come back from Cuba with a Panamanian hat, white or cream-colored linen suits, booties. Neither can miss the golden fob, some shiny and of course the Havana cigar. For the women, white or cream lace suits, linen, all accompanied by many jewels like pearl necklaces. Both can have in common a caged parrot or leather suitcases full of money.
What does the party consist of?
With the arrival of the Black Tomasa to the port, the Indians are given the starting signal. La Negra leads a parade that arrives at the Plaza de España, although that day it is called the Plaza de la Habana. From there, eating, drinking, dancing and above all laughing are the only objectives of the day. People from all over the world come to the island for this unique purpose.
There are many carnivals around the world, but like Los Indianos, none of them are as popular as the others. It pays homage to the immigrant and remembers our history in an original and fun way. In addition you can take advantage to know the hundreds of corners that La Isla Bonita hides.
